Tips for Participating in Speed Networking Events

Tips for Participating in Speed Networking EventsTips for Participating in Speed Networking EventsSpeed networking is like speed dating for professionals. It evolved from the speed dating model of meeting a lot of people in a short amount of time. Speed networking is a structured process for facilitating introductions and conversation between people who dont know each other. The model is often employed at events for college alumni groups, chamber of commerce groups, professional organizations, and college or corporate orientations to develop relationships among participants. How Speed Networking Works A variety of methods can be used to structure interaction with a common thread being the rotation of participants so that each person gets the opportunity to interact with every other person attending the event. Each participant is allotted a period of time to introduce herself which will vary from 30 seconds to 5 minutes depending on the size of the group. When you RSVP for a speed networking event, youll be advised of how it will work, how to prepare, and what the dress code is for the program. Have an Elevator Speech Ready Prepare a short elevator speech which summarizes key elements of your work and educational history as well as what youre thinking about regarding your future career path. Practice articulating this information smoothly and succinctly within the time parameters of the event. Since speed networking is a two-way process, it is essential to listen carefully to each of your partners to make sure you understand their situation and so you can offer advice and help, whenever possible. Bring geschftliches miteinander Cards Business cards are often exchanged during speed networking events, and participants who hit it off can seek further opportunities for a one-on-one exchange. This might take place at a reception after the speed networking component of an event or on another day over a cup of coffee. Make sure your business card includes, in addition to your contact information, a reference to your LinkedIn profile or another website containing a detailed summary of your professional background. Sample Speed Networking Questions to Ask Showing a genuine interest in your partners during speed networking programs will help you to develop a solid rapport with other participants. Listening carefully to their introductions and sending nonverbal cues that show you understand what they are saying will be an important step in this process. Another key will be asking questions, like the following, which draw out your partners and show that you are tuned into them and engaged. Here are some sample questions to ask during a speed networking event. Based on what Ive told you about my interests and skills, can you think of any roles which I might be suited for in your industry? What skills are most critical to success in the work you are currently doing? What is the most challenging aspect of your current job?You mentioned that your first job after college was as a financial analyst how did you land that sttte?Im intrigued by the work you did as an editorial assistant. 6 unusual habits of the worlds most creative people

6 unusual habits of the worlds fruchtwein creative people6 unusual habits of the worlds most creative peopleI expend a huge amount of my time and energy writing books and articles and working to keep my company innovative. Ive developed an obsession with some of historys most creative minds in the hope that I might learn some tricks to expand my own creative productivity. Some of the things Ive learned are mora useful than others, and some are simply too weird to try.Steve Jobs, for example, routinely sat on toilets, dangling his bare feet in the water while he came up with new ideas, and Yoshiro Nakamatsu (inventor of the floppy disc) would dive deep under water until his brain was deprived of oxygen, then write his ideas on an underwater sticky pad.Weird ideas aside, Ive developed a pretty good understanding of the habits of some of historys most creative minds. Theres enough commonality between different people that Ive distilled their habits into strategies that anyone can follow. Six of these strategies stand out because they have the power to change the way you think about creativity. Give them a try, and youll reach new levels of creative productivity.1. Wake up earlyNot all creative minds are morning people. Franz Kafka routinely stayed up all night writing, and William Styron (author ofSophies Choice, among other best sellers) woke up at noon every day and considered his morning routine to be staying in bed for aelendher hour to think. However, early risers make up the clear majority of creative thinkers. The list of creative early risers ranges from Benjamin Franklin to Howard Schultz to Ernest Hemmingway, though they didnt all wake up early for the same reasons. Ben Franklin woke up early to plan out his day, while Schultz uses the time to send motivational emails to his employees. For many creative people, waking up early is a way to avoid distractions. Ernest Hemingway woke up at 5 a.m. every day to begin writing. He said, There is no one to disturb yo u and it is cool and cold and you come to your work and warm as you write. The trick to making getting up early stick is to do it every day and avoid naps- no matter how tired you feel. Eventually, you will abflug going to bed earlier to make up for the lost sleep. This can make for a couple of groggy days at first, but youll adjust quickly, and before you know it, youll join the ranks of creative early risers.2. Exercise frequentlyTheres plenty of evidence pointing to the benefits of exercise for creativity. Feeling good physically gets you in the right mood to focus and be productive. Exercise also forces you to have disconnected time (its tough to text or email while working out), and this allows you to reflect on whatever it is youre working on. In a Stanford study, 90% of people were more creative after they exercised. Its no surprise that so many creative and successful people built exercise into their daily routines. Kurt Vonnegut took walks into the nearby town, swam laps, and did push-ups and sit-ups, Richard Branson runs every morning, and composers Beethoven and Tchaikovsky both walked daily.3. Stick to a strict scheduleIts a common misconception that in order to be creative, one must live life on a whim with no structure and no sense ofneed to do anything, but the habits of highly successful and creative people suggest otherwise. In fact, most creative minds schedule their days rigorously. Psychologist William James described the impact of a schedule on creativity, saying that only by having a schedule can we free our minds to advance to really interesting fields of action.4. Keep your day jobCreativity flourishes when youre creating for yourself and no one else. Creativity becomes more difficult when your livelihood depends upon what you create (and you begin to think too much about what your audience will think of your product).Perhaps this is why so many successful and creative people held on to their day jobs. Many of them, like Stephen King, who was a schoolteacher, produced their breakout (and, in Kings case, what many consider his very best) work while they still held a 9 to 5.Day jobs provide more than the much-needed financial security to create freely. The list of successful, creative minds who kept their day jobs is a long one. Some notable individuals include Jacob Arabo, who started designing his own jewelry while working in a jewelry shop William Faulkner, who worked in a power plant while writingAs I Lay Dying and musician Philip Glass, who worked as a plumber.5. Learn to work anywhere, anytimeA lot of people work in only one place, believing its practically impossible for them to get anything done anywhere else. Staying in one place is actually a crutch studies show that changing environments is beneficial to productivity and creativity. E.B. White,E.B. If you keep waiting until you are in the perfect place at the ideal time, the time will never come.Steve Jobs started Apple in his moms garage, and JK Rowling wrote the first ideas forHarry Potteron a napkin on a train. When you have a creative idea, dont wait- put it into action as soon as you can. Recording that spark of creativity may very well be the foundation of something great.6. Learn that creative blocks are just procrastinationAs long as your heart is still beating, you have the ability to come up with new ideas and execute them. They may not always be great ones, but the greatest enemy of creativity is inactivity.Author Jodi Picoult summarized creative blocks perfectly I dont believe in writers block. How to Network When You Dont Know Anyone

How to Network When You Dont Know AnyoneHow to Network When You Dont Know Anyone4If you feel that you dont know anyone, here are three strategies to begin creating and expanding your network1. Examine where you stand.Dont know anyone to build your network? Think again. Make a list of people, and youll likely find you need more paper. Family, friends, coworkers (past and present), and neighbors should come to mind easily. Then, dig a little deeper. To which groups do you belong? With whom does your spouse socialize? People you know from anywhere- be it your synagogue or the school PTA- can be valuable connections.Make a point of talking to a variety of people, and accept offers from others to introduce you. Casting a wide net presents more opportunities to network, and you simply never know who might be in a position to help. As you find people with whom you seem to click, work on cultivating those relationships. Strong networks get built over time through mutual trust and respect.2.U tilize LinkedIn.When you join this professional online platform, one of the first things it can do is alert everyone on your email contacts list that you have set up a profile and ask each person to become one of your connections. This action has a variety of benefits, including remembering past acquaintances who slipped your mind. As people tend to be curious, most will view your profile, which starts the networking ball rolling. When someone accepts your connection request, follow up with a thank-you email and some light chat. Then, keep on top of the posts and career progress of your connections, and drop a line from time to time to offer encouragement, kudos, or input.Harnessing information from your profile and current connections, LinkedIn can recommend other people for your network. It also can facilitate meeting specific people of interest by looking for mutual connections to provide introductions. And dont forget to check out groups in your field of interest they provide pl enty of chances to meet others and establish a sense of community.3. Get out there.totenstill find your network a bit thin? Start saying yes to more requests. This might mean being your offices representative at a conference, joining your neighborhood association, or finally attending your alma maters Homecoming celebration. Volunteer work can bring you into contact with all kinds of people, and having a common cause can be an icebreaker. Similarly, taking on a leadership position at a professional event encourages natural interaction with other committee members and attendees. Show some initiative many people consider networking to be stressful, and they will be genuinely happy when you make the first moveLooking for moreadvice? Weve got you covered. How to Limit Work Stress During a Natural Disaster - The Muse

How to Limit Work Stress During a Natural Disaster - The MuseHow to Limit Work Stress During a Natural Disaster Natural disasters- hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, wildfires, volcanic explosions- come in varying degrees of awfulness. As weve seen with hurricanes affecting Texas, North Carolina, and Florida, and the wildfires sweeping through California, they can wipe out entire communities and affect surrounding areas for years. The most important order of business before, during, and after a natural disaster is, of course, your safety and well-being and that of your loved ones. Following that, personal property takes precedence. But having lived through both Hurricane Andrew and Hurricane Irma, I know that worrying about work during a natural disaster can increase your stress at a time when youd really rather be focusing on those other priorities. So from those whove been there, here are some tips to help you through the worst of times.Know Your Companys Emergency Respons e ProceduresSome natural disasters, like hurricanes, offer enough advance notice to make plans. Others come up much more suddenly, giving you little or no time to prepare.Guirong Grace Yan, the director of the Wind Hazard Mitigation Laboratory at Missouri University of Science Technology, advises taking steps to become familiar with your companys emergency response policies and procedures before anything actually happens. No matter where youre located, you should be informed about what to do in case of a crisis. That includes knowing your companys point person for crisis response. Make sure that colleague also has all your current contact information including, if pertinent, that of the person with whom you anticipate staying if youre evacuated. Knowing particular emergency procedures is especially important if you live or work in an area thats prone to certain types of disasters. But no matter where youre located, you should be informed about what to do in case of a crisis.Keep in T ouch However You CanSimply knowing who to call or text isnt enough. Wind, floods, or fires can take out cell towers and electricity, making normal communication difficult or impossible. Peter Yang, co-founder of the resume writing services company ResumeGo, saw his office in Houston destroyed during Hurricane Harvey. He recommends that everybody invest, if you can, in backup generators, extended batteries, and wireless cards, and keep managers updated on your status however possible, including through social media. Indeed, dont discount the value of Twitter, Instagram, and the like. Margit Bisztray, who owns the Key West Insider Guide, says that during Hurricane Irma, social media welches how everyone stayed in touch. Facebook for the people who had access to it, and Facebook by proxy for people in touch with people down here who had satellite phones or land lines. That way, residents of the area, many of whom worked in the service industry, knew if there was even a functioning rest aurant or hotel to which they could return. Social media was how everyone stayed in touch. Facebook for the people who had access to it, and Facebook by proxy for people in touch with people down here who had satellite phones or land lines.Sometimes using social media can actually make it easier for you to contact folks from across the country (or the globe) than for those in the area to do the saatkorn. If any co-workers are outside the crisis zone, they may be able to help coordinate communications. Lisa Mattson, Director of Marketing and Communications for Jordan Vineyard Winery, was on vacation in Europe when the notorious Tubbs fire began to consume Sonoma County in California. Separated by thousands of miles and several time zones as the fire circled her home, she found relief in texting other employees and crafting outward-facing messages for the website about the state of the winery. Put Safety FirstFor those sudden events that hit while you are actually at work, dont stick around to lend a hand. Yan explains that, for example, damage from tornadoes can lead to unsafe building conditions and, in some cases, fires, so it is ideal to evacuate the building when the all clear is given. The same goes for any aftermath. Disaster recovery is usually best left to the professionals (although in some regions, like the Panhandle in Florida, that assistance may take a little while to come). If you feel that you are out of harms way, being agreeable helps everybody. On the other hand, a supervisor might request help with some tasks that arent quite within your job scope, such as covering computers with plastic to protect them from water damage. If you feel that you are out of harms way, being agreeable helps everybody. However, if youve offered your labor and its been accepted, dont expect to be paid for your time or services beyond your regular salary unless youve negotiated that in advance with your boss, Yan says.If youve evacuated from the office space and been given the go ahead to come back by emergency personnel, check in with your manager to help you make informed decisions about what parts of the office are truly functional or what work is due when. Ask for AssistanceIf the workplace is largely unaffected, but employees are hard hit- as was the case with Jordan Vineyard Winery, where several people schwefellost everything- then work can become a haven. Normalcy and routine are an antidote to insurance matters, bank papers, this bill, that phone call. It gives you something else to think about, acknowledges Mattson, who more than a year later is still not back in her home, which had to undergo smoke remediation and reconstruction. But support is key. When you make contact with your supervisor post-disaster, give a timeline for your return. And dont be afraid to ask for what you need, from time off to an advance on a paycheck. Good employers often have rainy-day funds, or at least enough money to cover an extra payroll load. In times of disaster, funds are sometimes repurposed expressly for the means of helping employees and their families. At the winery, for example, John Jordan handed out $500 to every employee. Companies might bring in emotional therapy animals or schedule team-building activities. Take advantage of those even if you think theyre corny- the comfort and camaraderie really can help.Companies might bring in emotional therapy animals or schedule team-building activities. Take advantage of those even if you think theyre corny- the comfort and camaraderie really can help. You should also check your insurance plans and other benefits for mental health offerings and use them, whether theyre for therapy to handle feelings of displacement and loss or gym memberships to reduce stress levels. If you dont know what your options are, make an appointment with a manager or someone in HR and find out.At the same time, be willing to assume others duties until they, too, can return to work at full speed. Collea gues may have it better or much, much worse. What Yan calls the disaster recovery process, which can refer to the initial aftermath or to the long-term effects of much greater losses, is like grief. Its different for everybody, highly personal, and shouldnt be up for judgment. Decide to Stay or Start OverIn worst-case scenarios, businesses will have to completely start over, and youll be out of a job- even if only temporarily. If your personal life or property has been affected as well, this may be a good time to relocate rather than rebuild. Sometimes the memories make it too hard to stay. Mattson is now counseling victims of the Camp Fire on deciding whether to stay and fight with insurance companies or take what money is available to begin anew somewhere else. If youre emotionally and financially able to remain, it may result in real-life work benefits. Participating in local charitable efforts can not only help the region recover, but also assist you in achieving some closure. A nd when offices and businesses re-open, employers remember those who acted on that intrinsic need for solidarity, as Bisztray witnessed while working with an organization called Nourishing the Lower Keys to feed those who were rebuilding. Over and over, those who were the most generous, selfless, and accommodating with their time and resources were rewarded. Most restaurants were running on skeleton staff- usually a chef and then the owner doing most everything else, or maybe one server available. Everyone was very patient, waiting for staff to return and get a grip on their home situation before they could return to work, she recalls. Over and over, those who were the most generous, selfless, and accommodating with their time and resources were rewarded.Sometimes theres no escaping a natural disaster when its coming your way, and employers are (or should be) understanding should the worst occur. But by preparing and acting professionally to the best of your ability, you can, at the very least, reduce your stress levels and safeguard your reputation during and after an event.

Why the Future is Bright for In-House Creative Professionals

Why the Future is Bright for In-House Creative ProfessionalsWhy the Future is Bright for In-House Creative ProfessionalsAlex Center, konzept director at The Coca-Cola Company and a member of AIGAs In-house INitiative steering committee, explains why the time is ripe to consider an in-house creative career. While this years Creative Team of the Future research takes a close look at topics such as collaboration in the workdistributionspolitik, emerging roles and skills development, we also want to share a big-picture view of the in-house landscape with you. And who better to give an honest assessment than Alex Center?GET THE CREATIVE kollektiv OF THE FUTURE REPORTCenter is a design director at The Coca-Cola Company and leads the strategy and creative vision for brands such as vitaminwater, smartwater and Powerade. Hes also a member of AIGAs In-house INitiative steering committee, a group devoted to addressing the unique opportunities and challenges faced by in-house creative teams. Here, Center talks about in-house life and what it will take to thrive in a corporate environment. What advice do you have for designers who want to pursue and excel in an in-house creative role?Alex Center My best advice is to find something - a brand, a business, a movement, a yogurt company, a service provider - that you have a strong passion for. Working in-house, youre going to wake up thinking about the same mission every day, so its important that you have a whole lot of heart for it. Also, know early that youre going to have to put your ego to the side. In-house work is not about celebrating the singular designer or individual its about achieving a goal through the power of collaboration. It is definitely a team sport. What skills and attributes do you think will be necessary for in-house career advancement in the future? You need to have an equal understanding of brand- and business-building. Designers are now in leadership positions and are being asked to tackle the vast challen ges that modern companies face. For years, weve been vying for a seat at the table and now we have it (which is actually a little daunting). Skills that make us unique as designers - like empathy, the ability to think holistically and systematically, and a level of taste and craft that allows us to execute with simplicity and ingenuity - will be invaluable to businesses. From your vantage point, how is the in-house environment changing? Its changing drastically every year. I think this moment is the most that people have ever talked about in-house design. There are so many talented designers working inside of companies and so many companies being founded by designers or building in-house teams. Its a crazy, exciting time for in-house creative professionals, and Im proud to be a part of it. Im finding that people who never considered working in-house are starting to think, How do I go work inside versus outside? As long as companies are valuing design and using it as a weapon to win, we will continue to see in-house grow. What unique opportunities do in-house creative jobs provide that others dont?I think that inside of every designer is the ambition to make an impact on the world that we live in - I know thats what motivates me. An in-house environment is the best place to create that impact and truly feel like you are building something. I admire and respect the work that agencies do, but at the end of the day they are always at the back seat of the businesses they work for. I like to drive the car. What most excites you about working in-house?I love having my hands in so many different types of projects at the same time, while working toward one mission. The more aspects of a business that people are involved in, the better they can be at solving problems and designing experiences. In todays world, every single human interaction with a brand needs to make a connection that is relevant and honest. Whether its a coupon or the future of how we consume products, its one ambition. Connecting those pieces and being a part of the complete puzzle is what excites me most about working in-house.Why do you feel in-house creative professionals have a bright future? We live in complex times and I dont see it getting any simpler. Designers are needed to figure out how to make the complex simpler and create solutions with the end consumer in mind. In-house used to be the place where you would go at the end of your career to get a big paycheck and achieve better work-life balance, but not to be in a position to make great design work. In the future, in-house will be the only place to make great design work.Anything else youd like to add?We are all really lucky to do the things we do every single day for a living. Dont ever forget that. And follow me on Instagram at thealexcenter.
